  • Explain what is meant by 'end of life care' and distinguish this from 'palliative care'
  • Define Advance Care Planning (ACP) and Advance Directives and discuss the benefits and potential risks of implementing advance care plans
  • Possess an awareness of how different cultures approach death and dying, and appreciate the importance of talking about death and dying in a culturally sensitive way
  • Discuss how to respond to potentially challenging questions from patients and families regarding death and dying
  • Define spiritual wellbeing and know how to instigate a discussion with people at the end of their lives regarding spiritual needs
  • Describe how to manage common symptoms that people at the end of their lives may experience, including: pain; agitation and distress; oral health issues; nausea or vomiting; decreased appetite and thirst; and shortness of breath.
  • Know what is meant by anticipatory medication and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this approach
  • Recall what is meant by DNACPR and understand how this applies to end of life care
  • Recognise when and how to use the NHS Continuing Healthcare Fast Track Tool
  • Explain how to administer care to a patient or resident after they have died
  • Appreciate the variety of ways in which someone's loved ones may grieve, and be able to signpost to sources of bereavement support

    This in-depth module covers the standard principles and best practice guidelines in regard to working with people at the end of their life. It includes the benefits and potential risks of implementing Advance Care Planning and Advance Directives; anticipatory medication; DNACPR; managing common symptoms at end of life. It also covers how different cultures approach death and dying; spiritual well being and how to respond to potentially challenging questions. This course is CPD accredited.
